Bankadagarh, a place that lies about 140 km south of
Bhubaneswar, is a lesser known heritage destination in
Orissa. About 1,500 years ago, it was a prosperous, pulsating capital of the Sailodbhavas Dynasty. The remnants of of an old fort, a boundary wall of stone, foundations of mud and a temple with many stone sculptures and inscriptions reveal its past glory. Idols, sculptures, inscriptions, broken pieces of clay pottery in large numbers have been excavated from this site. This reserved area is protected by natural barriers such as Panabaraja hill in the south, Dungimall hill in the north, Birajai hill in the west and Bankada hill in the east.
Bankadagarh is located in Niladriprasad village near Banpur in Khordha District. This great place is easily accessible from Bhubaneswar where all modes of road transports are available. Since the place has not been developed as a tourist place, tourists have to make their own arrangements to explore these beautiful antiquities.
