The people of
Meghalaya make use of the abundantly available bamboo in making shovels. These shovels are strong enough for the heavy work meant for a metal shovel.
The rim is constructed from thick splits of bamboo. Concentric rectangular frames are constructed using outer splits of bamboo. A mat is woven from bamboo outer splits over these frames. This mat is folded into half, with the sides held together by twisted bamboo ropes. This structure forms the scoop of the shovel. The use of the thick outer splits gives this shovel the required strength.
