Kumaon region of
Uttaranchal. It is also known by the name Bhagnaul. The word ‘bair’ literally means ‘dispute.’ As the word suggests, this song is sung in a manner of debate. It involves two singers, who sing in a manner of questions and answers. This debate through the song continues until one singer concedes defeat.
The Biar songs are a major attraction during fairs and festivals. There is no particular topic for these songs. The singers simply choose the topic just before the performance.
