Ayyappan Thiyyattu is a traditional musical art form typical to central
Kerala. It is a devotional offering to
Lord Ayyappa. This art form is also known by two other names - Ayyappan Pattu and Sasthaam Pattu.
This old ritual is performed by a group of people, who sit together and sing the songs praising Ayyappa. Through these songs, the devotees narrate the various stages of God's divine birth, love and devotion to his parents, valour and heroic deeds. The song is accompanied with the rhythmic music of a unique percussion instrument called ‘Udukku’.
