The district of Auraiya was formed from
Etawah District by combining two tehsils named Auraiya and
Bidhuna. It lies in the south-western portion of
Uttar Pradesh with an area of 2,054 sq km. The population is about 2 million. Auraiya is bounded by
Kannauj District in the north, by
Kanpur Dehat District in the east, and by
Jalaun District in the south. It adjoins on the western border with tehsil Bharthana of the Etawah District, and
Gwalior District. The main language spoken is
Hindi.
The average annual rainfall is 80 cm. About 85% of the annual rainfall is received during the south-west monsoon months from June to September, August being the rainiest month. May is generally the hottest month.
The rivers and streams consist of the Yamuna and its tributaries the Chambal and the Kuwari, the Sengar and its tributary Sirsa, the Rind or Arind and its tributaries the Ahenya, the Puraha and the Pandu.
The economy depends mainly on the small scale industries, trade, and commerce. Gram, paddy, pulses and oil-seeds are the main items for trade. The production of handloom cloth has also increased. Auraiya, Etawah and
Jaswantnagar are the main trade centers of handloom cloth.
The National Chambal Sanctuary, famous for the rare Gangetic dolphin, is a place of interest and is at a distance of 30 km from Auraiya. The sanctuary was founded in 1979 and forms part of a large area co-administered by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.
