Astor River is the main tributary of the
Indus River in
Ladakh of
Jammu and Kashmir. It originates from a glacier on the north-facing slopes of the great
Himalayan range near the Burzil Pass.
Astor River flows north-westerly before joining the Indus River. During the course, the river is joined by many small snow-fed streams. The entire catchment area is devoid of vegetation and consists of U-shaped valleys, glacial moraines, cirques and steep slopes.
