Astasambhu Temples in
Sonpur are very famous. These ancient temples are repositories of the rich cultural past of Sonpur. These are dedicated to
Lord Shiva and are eight in number. Among them, the
Suvarnameru Temple of the 16th century, on the western banks of river Tel, is the most notable. Another temple, Gokarneshwar is also situated on the western bank of the river. There is no historical evidence available regarding the date of temple construction.
Rameshwar Temple is another important temple situated on the confluence of the rivers
Mahanadi and
Tel. Other temples are those of Paschim Somnath, Sidheshwar, Lokanath, Rudradev and Baneshwar.
The State Highway 14 leading to
Bhubaneswar from
Balangir passes through Sonpur. Sonpur is well connected by road from all major towns of
Orissa.
