Assi Khamba or Eighty Pillars is among the places of interest in
Mahavan, a small pilgrim town located 11 km from
Mathura, in
Uttar Pradesh. It is also known as Nanda’s Palace.
This palace conforms to the contemporary style of Buddhist architecture. It has great resemblance to the Qutab Minar in design. According to the inscriptions in the pillars, the history of this palace dates back to the 10th century. Later this structure was rebuilt as a mosque by Aurangzeb.
Mahavan is connected by regular bus services with Mathura, which holds the nearest railhead - Mathura Junction Railway Station.
