Arittapatti is a hill village situated five miles from
Melur on the Alagarkoil-
Madurai route. The Kalinjamalai Hill, situated near the village, has a cave. The village got its name from the revered missionary Arittha who resided in the cave. Bramhi inscriptions of the second and first century BC detail that the cave was donated by one Chalivan Attananvoliyan of Nelveli. There is the rock carving of a seated
tirthankar covered by a triple umbrella over the head. It reveals that the village was a Jain centre. Arittapatti is also known as Tiruppinaiyanrnalai.
