Anandamoyee Ma, India's most prominent contemporary saint, was born in 1896 in
West Bengal. She married at the age of 13 and when her husband perceived her spiritual stature, he considered her as only his preceptor. Even though Ma was almost illiterate and practically untrained in any spiritual discipline, she could instruct scholars and spiritual seekers of all religions effortlessly. She attained
samadhi in 1982. Today several
ashrams have been founded in the name of Ma throughout the country, serving many social and religious causes.
