Mamallapuram on the land overlooking the sea. It was an 18th century fort built by the Nawabs and was destroyed by the British in 1760. Presently it is a picturesque and serene spot with backwaters and cool sand. Local fishermen assist tourists in a pleasurable boating experience around the fort.
