Agneeswarar Temple




Agneeswarar Temple is a highly revered Shivasthalam located at Tiruppugalur, about 6 km from Nannilam, in Tiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu. The temple is known primarily for the manifestation of Lord Shiva as Chandrasekharar. The temple enshrines Agneeswarar or Konappiraan as the presiding deity along with his divine consort Karuntaazhkuzhali (Chootikambal).

Agneeswarar Temple has a five tired Rajagopuram and two prakarams. The 100 pillared hall of the temple boasts several inscriptions from Kulottungan period. This hall serves as the Appar Mandapam. The temple has a stone image of Chandrasekharar in a mandapam near the Agni Teertham. The Utsava Murti idol is an eye catching one with 3 feet and seven arms.

Legend has it that Lord Vishnu is believed to have manifested himself as the Vanni Maram here.

The Appar Festival celebrate in the Tamil month of Chithirai is a major draw attended by thousand so f devotees from far and near.
