The temple enshrines Agneeswarar or Theeyadiappar as the presiding deity along with his consort Vaarkonda Mulaiyammai (Soundara Nayaki).

Agneeswarar Temple has 3 prakarams and is spread over an area of about an acre. The temple has great historical significance – it was part of an old fort captured by the British in 1771. The temple was later recaptured by Hyder Ali in 1781. The temple has inscriptions dating back to Raja Raja I and other Chola emperors and the Pandyas and Vijayanagar periods.

The annual Brahmotsavam, celebrated in the month of Panguni, is a major draw attended by thousands of devotees from far and near.
