Agastheeswarar Temple




Agastheeswarar Temple, also known as Tiru Agathiyan Palli Agastheeswarar Temple, is an ancient shrine situated at Vedaranyam, in Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu. This highly revered Shivasthalam is located adjacent to the salt pans of Vedaranyam. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple enshrines Agastheeswarar as the presiding deity along with his consort Baagampiriyaal or Soundaranayaki.

Legend has it that Sage Agastya is blessed wish a vision of divine marriage of Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati here.

Agastheeswarar Temple has several inscriptions relating to Kulasekhara Pandyan (13th Century) and to the period of Imperial Cholas. Vedaranyam Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
