Achaleswarar Temple, also known as Tiruvarur Araneri Temple, is a highly revered shrine situated at Achaleswaram, in
Tiruvarur District of
Tamil Nadu. The temple is situated on the southern part of the
Tyagarajar Temple at
Tiruvarur.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Achaleswarar along with his consort Achaleswari. It is believed that Saint Appar is said to have glorified this temple through his pathigams.
This ancient shrine was reconstructed by the Chola queen Sembian Mahadevi during the 10th century. This west facing temple comprises a sanctum, and an ardhamandapam which preserves several inscriptions dating back to the period of Raja Raja Chola.
The niche images here include those of Ardhanariswara, Goddess Durga, Bhikshatanar, Lord Brahma, Lingodbhava, Lord Dakshinamurthy, Sage Agastya and Nataraja.
