The House of Abdul Fazal (Akbar’s historian) is a single-storeyed building located near the northern wall of the
Jami Masjid in
Fatehpur Sikri, 37 km from
Agra. Nearby is seen another house, believed to be that of his brother Faidi.
Built of red sandstone, the Mughal style building has a tibara dalan or verandah, with three openings in the front, facing north. The verandah has two pairs of beautifully carved pillars. The roof of the verandah is supported on beautiful brackets at the top of the pillars. There are two small rooms attached to the verandah. The central room is oblong, large, and has two rooms on its sides. The rooms are entered through engrailed arches.
The paintings which were once present in the ceiling of the main room and the verandah have now faded away. A stairway leads to the upper rooms. There is a long gallery, which connects two suites of upper rooms. Another stairway is provided to go down to the baths and toilets.
