Aati Kalanja is a ritualistic folk dance of
Karnataka, mainly performed by the 'Nalke' Community. It is believed that a minor spirit, named Kalanja, protect the village during rainy season (July-August) and the dance is dedicated to the spirit.
The performers dress up in costumes made of tender coconut leaves and wear anklets, colorful cloth, and a long cap made of areca spathe. They also holds an umbrella decorated with leaves and flowers. Their face will be painted with various colors and designs.
The musical instrument used for the dance is called tembere. Other members of the group will sing the story of the spirit, in accordance with the beats of the drum.
