Aabathasagawara Temple




Aabathasagawara Temple, also known as Guru Temple, is situated at Alangudi, in Tiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu. This temple is held sacred to Brahaspathi (Lord Guru) and is known as a Guru Sthalam. The presiding deity is Sri Aabathsagayeswara or Aranyeswara, a swayambhu Lingam. The goddess worshipped here is Umai Ammai or Elavarkuzhali. Sri Aabathsagayeswara is considered as the lord of the Dhanu and Meenam rashis.

Aabathasagawara Temple is the 98th temple among the 127 temples located on the southern bank of Cauvery River and is also one among the 274 ‘Padal Petra Sthalams’ in Chola Nadu.

The temple has a separate sanctum dedicated to Lord Dakshinamurthy. It is believed that Sage Agastyaand Adi Shankaracharya had worshipped Lord Guru in Alangudi.

Guru Peyarchi is a major festival celebrated here which represents the movement of Guru Bhagawan from Kadaga rashi to Simha rashi.

Aabathasagawara Temple is about 17 km south of Kumbakonam on the way to Mannargudi. Nidamangalam Railway Station, on the Thanjavur-Tiruvarur rail route, is the nearest railhead.
