The Yamuna river rises from the
Champasar glacier in the state of
Uttaranchal. It is also held that the river originates from
Saptarishi Kund. There is a sacred temple dedicated to
Goddess Yamuna. The Hanuman Ganga merges with Yamuna River at
Hanumanchatti. The river is also linked with Hindu mythology as the home of the sage, Asit Muni. According to the legend, Yamuna is the daughter of the Sun God,
Surya and the sister of
Yama, the God of Death. The river is also connected with
Lord Krishna. His father
Vasudeva crossed Yamuna with baby Krishna heading for a safe place for his son.
1,370 km long, the Yamuna River flows along the eastern boundary of the states of Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, enters Delhi and merges with the Ganges in Allahabad. The Chambal and Betwa rivers are the major tributaries. The Kalesar forest in Yamunagar District of Haryana is the entry point of the river into the plains.
