Vidyasagar University, established in 1981, is located in
Midnapore. A State University, its jurisdiction is limited to the
Midnapore District.
Around 39 colleges in the surrounding area, including three engineering colleges are affiliated to the university. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs. Distant learning courses are also offered.
