In the Indian epic Ramayana, Sita is the wife of
Sri Ram, the king who ruled
Ayodhya. Sita is thought to be the incarnation of
Goddess Lakshmi and the synonym of self-sacrifice, peace, and devotion.
When Sri Ram was denied kinghood and exiled to the forest for 14 years, she too followed him. While in forest, Sita was kidnapped by the Asura king Ravana. Ram with the help of monkey warriors, succeeded in rescuing Sita.
But when back at home in Ayodhya, Sita was suspected for her pativratya (a woman’s sole devotion to her husband). So Rama had to leave his beloved wife in the forest. It was at the hermitage of sage Valmiki, she gave birth to twin babies. Days passed and these children were taught the story of Ramayana by Valmiki. Soon they became well versed in the Vedas and Upanishads.
