Sitar

Sitar is one of the most famous and oldest string instruments in the Indian music world. The word ‘Sitar’ originated from the Persian word ‘Sehtar’, where ‘Se’ means three and ‘Tar’ means string. Sitar can be played solo or in combination with other instruments. While playing it, the performer wears the mizrab on the forefinger of the right hand to pluck the strings. This instrument is usually accompanied by the Sarod in jugalbandi. The alap, jod, gat and jhala conventions can be followed in Sitar recitals.
