Rabindranath Tagore was a scholar, freedom fighter, writer, musician and painter, all rolled into one. His famous work Gitanjali won the Nobel Prize in 1913. He has made substantial contributions in the field of literature.
Tagore was born on May 7, 1861, at Jorasanko in West Bengal. His father’s name was Debendranath Tagore and mother’s name Sharada Devi. Tagore was a student of the St Xavier's School.
Apart from Gitanjali, Tagore's poetic works include Sonar Tari, Puravi, Cycle of the Spring and Evening Songs. Among his novels are Gora, the Wreck, Raja Rani, Ghare Baire and Raj Rishi. Chitra is a play in verse. Kabuli Wallah and Kshudita Pashan are among his famous stories.
Tagore founded the Vishwabharati University in 1901. He is the author of India's National anthem, 'Jana gana mana ...' Tagore died on 8 August, 1941.
