Gadwall (Anas strepera) is a gray colored dabbling duck, a little smaller than the
mallard, with an obvious black rear end. It grows up to 14 inches in length and displays a white wing patch in flight.
Males are gray-brown, with a white belly and a black rump. The bill is slate-gray and the legs and feet are yellow. Females have a mottled brown appearance, a yellowish bill with dark spots, and a smaller white speculum. The bird inhabits freshwater lakes, marshes and swamps often seeking the cover of aquatic vegetation. It feeds on stems, leaves and seeds.
The bird can be spotted at Anchar Lake in Srinagar and Kalindi Kunj in Delhi.
