Khardah is a town located in
North 24 Parganas District of
West Bengal. This industrial area is situated near the
Hooghly River and is about 10 km north of
Kolkata. Being an industrial hub many people from
Bihar and
Orissa have migrated here making it a thickly populated area.
Khardah is of great historic importance.
Rabindranath Tagore had sojourned in Khardah in a house, which was swallowed by the river. There are also marks of the Vaishnavite cult, which reminds about the history of the place. Lord Nityananda, a disciple of Sri Krishna Chaitanya, resided here several years making Khardah a holy place.
Shyamsundar temple, raised by Pateswari Ma Goswami, is a major attraction of Khardah. Ras and Dol celebrations are famous in Khardah.
Khardah is easily accessible by road and river. To reach Khardah by road, one has to catch buses plying towards Barrackpore from Howrah Station or Esplanade Station. Minibuses also operate from Dalhousie Square towards Khardah. Kardaha Railway Station is nearby (3 km west). The nearest airport is at Dum Dum.
