Amartya Kumar Sen, a renowned economist and teacher, was born in East Bengal (now Bangladesh) on November 3, 1933. He completed his education in
Kolkata and Cambridge, England. Sen has done extensive research on several fields of economics and philosophy including welfare economics, social choice theory, decision theory, economic measurement, development economics and political philosophy. In 1998, he was awarded Nobel Prize for his contributions in the field of welfare economics. In addition, he is the recipient of the Giovanni Agnelli International Prize and the Alan Shawn Feinstein World Hunger Award. Currently, he is teaching at the Harvard University.
