Kalighat is a famous pilgrim spot located on the banks of
River Hooghly, in
Kolkata. It is believed that the city derives its name after this place. Kalighat is located on the metro rail route from
Alipore.
Kalighat is regarded as one of the 52 Shakti Peethams of India; it is thought to be the place where the toes of the right foot of Shakti or Sati fell. The 200-year-old Kalighat Temple, situated at the shores of Adi Ganga here, is a major point of pilgrimage in the city.
