Himalayan Newt is an endangered species dark in color and measuring about 160 mm to 170 mm. It is one of the rarest and oldest amphibian creatures found in the hills of
Darjeeling.
It is also known as Himalayan Salamander. During April to September, they inhabit temporary and perennial pool, streams and cool mountain lakes. Bugs, water beetles, tadpoles, insect larvae and comprise the diet of the animal. It often shelter among bamboo stumps during summer season.
It can be seen in the Jorepokhri Salamander Wildlife Sanctuary, West Bengal.
