Durgapur is an industrial town situated along the banks of
Damodar River, in Burdwan District,
West Bengal. It is also a major rice-trading center in the district. Durgapur is 168 km north-west of
Kolkata.
Major industries in the township are Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), Alloy Steel Plant (ASP), Durgapur Chemicals Limited, Phillips Carbon Black Limited and Durgapur Thermal Power Station (DTPS), which is the main source of power for the town.
Places of tourist interest include the Durgapur Barrage, Kumarmangalam Park,
Mayapur,
Tilaiya and Maithon.
Asansol (42 km), Chittranjan (77 km), Jaidev (22 km),
Shantiniketan (61 km) and
bishnupur (72 km) constitute interesting excursions.
Nearest airport is at Kolkata.
Durgapur Railway Station is on the main railway line connecting Kolkata and New Delhi.
National Highway 2 (Grand Trunk Road) passes through the town.
