Crested Kingfisher (Megaceryle lugubris) is a huge (41 cm) crested, dark gray and white kingfisher. It is deeply barred grayish black and white above, while the crest is shaggy, black with white streaks. It has a complete white collar, white face, and a black malar streak turning to orange neck patch on males. The long tail is strongly barred black and white. The bill is large and dark.
The bird inhabits fast-flowing streams and rivers and sometimes lakes in northern and north-eastern uplands of the country. It dives from favorite perch to catch fish.
