Bankura, the headquarters of
Bankura District, is located north of Dhaleshwari (Dhalkisor) River and is an important agricultural center. Bankura is 185 km north-west of
Kolkata.
This place is well known for its handicrafts especially the
Bankura horse. There are several educational institutions including a medical college and an engineering college. Rice and oilseed milling, metal ware manufacture and cotton weaving are the major activities of the town. There is also railway workshop at Bankura.
