Savitri was born after eighteen years of continuous and dedicated prayers by her parents, King Ashwapati and Queen Malavi. When it was time for marriage, she chose a young prince named Satyavan who had lost his kingdom and was living with his parents in the forest. It was prophesied that the prince would live only a year thereafter. In spite of the prophesy, Savitri was determined to marry him. After marriage, she spent all her time serving her mother-in-law and father-in-law and praying for her beloved husband’s life. Days passed and the prince died eventually.
Yama, the god of death, was pleased with Savitri's devotion to her husband. He returned her husband’s life as well as his kingdom.
