Indian Botanic Garden, on the West bank of the
Hooghly, is about 20 km from
BBD Bagh. It is broadly known as 'Calcutta Botanic Garden'. Founded by the East India Company in 1787, the garden is spread over an area of 273 acres. The garden has around 12,000 living perennial plants and over 2.5 million dried out plant specimens in the herbarium. Central National Herbarium of the Botanical Survey of India is situated here.
The garden is famous for the 200 year old banyan tree, with a circumference of 330 m. The Palm House, the Orchid House, the Fernery, the cacti and succulents, the pine and bamboo collection, and the giant water lily of Amazon are the specialties. Indian Botanic Garden is an important supplier of plants to many European gardens. It remains an important center for botanical research.
