At an altitude of 10,805 ft, Yamunotri is the source of the sacred river
Yamuna. Yamunotri can be reached from
Dehradun via Yamuna Bridge and
Barkot or from
Rishikesh.It is the westernmost shrine in the
Garhwal Himalayas and the first stop in the
Yatra (Religious Pilgrimage). The shrine of Yamunotri is situated in the direction opposite to
Gangotri. It is believed that the temple of Yamunotri was built by
Maharani Gularia of
Jaipur in the last decade of the 19th century. It was later rebuilt in 1923. The shrine can also be visited via
Mussoorie and Barkot.
The temple remains closed from November to April. The best time to visit Yamunotri is from May to June and September to October. Jolly Grant
is the nearest airport while Rishikesh is the nearest rail head.
