Originating near Badrinath, Alaknanda River is the main tributary of the
Ganges. One of the sources of the river is Satopanth, a triangular lake at a height of 4402 m. The Alaknanda passes through the western borders of
Pauri Garhwal District. The river separates the district from
Tehri Garhwal,
Dehradun and
Haridwar districts. It continues its way to Vishnuprayag, where it merges with river Dhauli Ganga.
Alka Puri, the origin of the Alaknanda is an attractive tourist spot.
Badrinath Temple and the natural spring Tapt Kund are along the banks. Multi-day adventure trips including rafting and kayaking can be enjoyed here. The best time to visit is October-November and March-April.
