Situated at height of 1,615 m above sea level, Champawat was the erstwhile capital of Chand Raja of
Kumaon. It is located in
Champawat District of
Uttaranchal and is 76 km south of
Pithoragarh.
Champawat is famous for its scenic beauty and marvelous sculptures. Lord Vishnu is believed to have taken his second incarnation as Kurma Avatar here. A small fort and the temples of Baleshwar, Champadari, Ratneshwar and Durga adorn the city.
