The district of Haridwar is situated on the western part of Uttaranchal. Haridwar, covering an area of 2,360 sq km, has a population of more than 1.4 million. It has a rich ancient religious and cultural heritage. There are lush green forests and small ponds, which add to the scenic beauty of this holy land. Haridwar town is the district headquarters.

There are plenty of water resources as Haridwar is situated on the banks of the Ganges and almost all kind of food grains are cultivated in abundance. The important fairs and festivals are Makara Sankranti, Shivratri, Ramnavmi, Baisakhi, Buddha Poornima, Kanwar Mela, Durga Puja and Dussehra. The major tourist destinations are Rishikesh, Maya Devi temple, Pareshwar Mahadev Temple, Hari-Ki-Pairi, Swarg Niwas Temple, Mansa Devi temple, Daksha Mahadev temple, Piran Kaliar, Shravan Nath Math, Bhimgoda Kund, Pawan Dham, Shri Harihar Peeth Ashram and Shanti Kunj Ashram. The Kumbh Mela and Ardh Kumbh which attracts pilgrims from all over the world, occur after rotation of every twelve and six years respectively. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, 41 km from the district headquarters.
