Niti is a scenic village situated in the Dhauli Ganga valley of Garhwal Region, in
Uttaranchal. It is in fact the last of such settlements on the Indian side – the hamlet is right along the Tibet – China border. Gamsali is the last settlement on the Indian side that can be reached by vehicle. Niti is 6 km from Gamsali. The
Niti Pass connects Niti with Tibet.
Niti is a conservative village where the residents believe in communty living. Marccha community form the majority of the inhabitants. Wedding and festivals are time for bonding and those families that have migrated out of the village in search of work return to be a part of the merriment. Infact, it is this kinship that gives the community an identity.
Puja, celebrated in honor of goddess Nanda Devi, is a major festival in Niti. During the festivites, the idol is taken from one home to another in a procession, usually led by a group of dancers. Singing, dancing and merry making continue till late night.
Jolly Grant Airport is the closest air-strip while the nearest railway station is at Rishikesh.
