Ghri Sankranti is a festival of
Uttaranchal. Earlier, during the Chand rule, craftsmen received rewards on this day by showing or exhibiting articles of their crafts and handiwork, and the other people too carried flowers, fruits, vegetables to the royal household. Curd, milk, sweets and other tasty delights were brought to the royal court as presents for the gentry. This was known as the rite of 'olag'.
This festival is called ''Ghrit' or 'Ghee' (clarified butter) Sankranti, because on this day there is a wide-spread consumption of a great amount of ghee, with breads prepared from pounded horse-bean.
