Rishikesh is a holy town situated at the lap of the lower
Himalayas, 24 km north of
Haridwar, in
Uttaranchal on the confluence of
Ganges and Chandrabhaga. It assumes prominence as an easy access point to Badrinath, Kedarnath,
Gangotri and Yamunotri. Rishikesh is about 240 km to the south-east of
New Delhi.
It is believed that performing austerities at this town leads to the attainment of salvation. The holy Ganga flows through the city and there are many temples -some ancient and some new– lying along its shores.
Places of interest include Lakshman Jhula, Gita Bhavan,
Triveni Ghat, Swarga Ashram and Nilkanth Mahadev.
Narendra nagar, Chila (20 km), Dehradun (42 km) and Mussoorie constitute interesting excursions. Rishikesh is also an ideal base for white water rafting and trekking.
Nearest airport is at Dehradun.
Rishikesh Railway Station is a minor station and the nearest major railway station is at Haridwar. By road, the city is connected with Dehradun, Haridwar and Mussoorie.
