Forest Research Institute (FRI), located in
Dehradun, is an institution under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE). It was established as Imperial Forest Research Institute in 1906.
The building is styled in Greeko Roman architecture and set amid Doon Valley. Research and extension activities are done in the states of Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Research areas include forest productivity, search of new species, clones and provenances, biodiversity conservation and seeking suitable forest management techniques. This is a Deemed University offering postgraduate courses. Six museums, maintained by the institute, are open to the public. The campus also houses the headquarters of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education and the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy.
New Forest, the campus of the institute, is a major attraction of Dehradun. The institute is open from 09:30 - 13:00 and 13:30 – 17:30 hrs.
