Almora

The hill station of Almora is located on a 5 km long saddle-shaped ridge of the Kashya hills in Uttaranchal. Almora was the summer capital of the Chand Rajas of Kumaon and the town depicts the historical and cultural remains of the glorious past. At an altitude of 1,646 m above sea level, the hill resort is much more Indian in atmosphere than the other hill resorts in the area. The town still maintains its ancient tradition, the construction of the houses made out of slate stone points to this fact. Almora is the headquarters of Almora District, with a population of 50,000.

Nanda Devi temple and Narsingh temple are the major shrines in the town. The Nanda Devi fair, held annually in September features a huge procession. Almora also offers good views of the mountains and great walks, including the 8 km trek up to the Kasar Devi Temple. Bright End Corner, 2.5 km southwest of the town center, gives an impressive sunset view. Pt GB Pant Museum, at Almora, displays remnants of the by gone era.

Almora is 103 km northeast of Nainital.
