Etawah District of Allahabad division in
Uttar Pradesh is spread over an area of 4,326 sq km. It is bordered by
Mainpuri District in the north,
Kannauj District and
Auraiya District in the east,
Agra District in the west and
Jalaun District, and
Bhind of
Madhya Pradesh in the south. The population touches 4.3 million.
The economy depends mostly on agriculture. Uttar Pradesh Co-operative Spinning Mills is a leading large-scale unit producing cotton yarn. Small scale industry units are also here.
The Yamuna is the main river and other rivers and streams include two tributaries of the Yamuna namely the Chambal and the Kunwari, the Sengar and its tributary Sirsa, the Rind or Arind and its tributaries the Ahneya, the Puraha, and the Pandu. 30,966 hectares of the land is covered with timber and other trees and shrubs. This forest land is blessed with a wide variety of animal and bird life.
About 90% of the annual rainfall received occurs during the south-west monsoon months that are from June to September. Places to visit are the Bhareh Ka Quila and the Chambal National Sanctuary.
