Pilibhit District forms part of Rohilkhand division in
Uttar Pradesh. It is said to be the corruption of Periya Bhit or the village mound of the Periyas, and the name Pilibhit is derived from a yellow mud wall which once surrounded this district. Pilibhit is bounded by Udhamsingh Nagar District and territory of Nepal in the north,
Shahjahanpur District in the south,
Kheri District and
Shahjahanpur District in the east, and
Bareilly District in the west. The population of the district is over 1.6 million, distributed over an area of 3,8 sq km.
A large portion is enclosed by dense forest. The Sharda, Chauka or Chuka, Gomti, Khanaut, Mala, Deoha, and Lohia are some of the main rivers and streams.
Sugar cane is the major cultivation. Industries include solvent plants, flour mill, steel plant, alcohol distillery, and sugar factories. There are rice mills, engineering unitsm and candle and flute manufacturing units.
Jama Masjid,
Gauri Shankar Temple, and Raja Venu Ka Tila are some places of interest.
