Ambedkarnagar District of
Uttar Pradesh covers an area of 2,520 sq km. The total population is 2 million. The district headquarters is Akbarpur. Ambedkarnagar derived its name from the father of the Indian Constitution,
Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar who protested for the depressed classes, women and other weaker sections of the society.
Most of the people reside in villages and depend upon farming for their livelihood. The Sarayu is the main river which is at the northern border. Majority of the area is irrigated by the lakes Devhat, Hanswar, and Darvan.
Ambedkarnagar is also an industrial center. Tanda, which is situated at a distance of 20 km from Akbarpur, is famous for power loom industry. The product, known as Tanda Terikat, is made available all over India. There is a National Thermal Power Corporation situated at Tanda Faizabad Road, which is about 8 km from Tanda.
Besides health centers and educational institutions, Ambedkarnagar District has tourist destinations such as the sangam (meeting place of the Madha and Visui rivers), Shravan Kshetra, Shivbaba, and Kichhauchha Sharif.
