Established in 1920, Lucknow University has a long history, whose origin can be traced back to a modest school founded about 135 years ago. The university campus, dotted with some old buildings of architectural excellence, is located on the banks of the Gomti River in
Lucknow. It extends to an additional campus on the western outskirts of the city on Sitapur road.
A State University, with about 32 affiliated colleges, it offers courses in the faculties of commerce, science, law, education, fine arts and ayurveda. The central library of the university, known as the Tagore Library, houses a rich collection of books, journals and about 10,000 copies of approved PhD and DLitt dissertations.
