Kheri District

Lakhimpur-Kheri District



Kheri occupies an area of 7,680 sq km and is the largest district in Uttar Pradesh. It lies on the Indo-Nepal border; the neighboring districts are Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Sitapur, and Bahraich. Kheri District is also known as Lakhimpur-Kheri District. The name Lakhimpur is derived from its earlier name Laxmipur, given on account of a Laxmi temple (Sankata Devi) present here. Kheri stands for Khair trees which covered the district earlier. Kheri town is located 2 km from Lakhimpur. Dudhwa National Park is an important tourist destination. Other places of religious and historical significance are Gola Gokaran Nath Temple, Frog Temple, Lilauti Nath Temple, and Shiv Temple Devkali.
