Dudhwa National Park is located in
Kheri District of
Uttar Pradesh and lies along the Indo-Nepal border in the foothills of the
Himalayas.
It spreads over 500 sq km and vegetation consists of Sal forests, extensive grasslands and wet marshes. Renowned for the
Barasingha or swamp deer, this sanctuary is home to jungle cats, leopard cats,
fishing cats, jackals, civets, sloth bear, sambar deer, otters, and crocodiles and chital.
Bird species include thick spectacular painted storks, black and white necked storks, sarus cranes and varied night birds of prey, such as great horned owl and jungle owlet. Besides, colorful woodpeckers, barbets, kingfishers, minivets, bee-eaters, and bulbuls are found.
Jeeps and mini buses can be hired from the park. Elephant rides are also available.
The best time to visit is November to May.
The nearest town is Palia (10 km). Amausi Airport at Lucknow (250 km) is the convenient airport. The nearest railheads are at Dudhwa (4 km), Palia and Mailani (37 km).
