Unnao, the administrative headquarters of
Unnao District, is an ancient town located between
Kanpur and
Lucknow, in
Uttar Pradesh. Unnao is 93 km south-west of Lucknow and 40 km north-east of Kanpur.
Unnao’s history dates back to about 1000 years. It is thought to have founded by Godo Singh, a Chauhan Rajput, in the 3rd quarter of the 12th century. It was named Sawai Godo then, but was rechristened as Unnao after a Bisen Rajput, Unwant Singh who was a ruler of this place for some time. Unnao came under the British administration in 1857-58 and remained with them until India’s independence in 1947.
Bangarmau, Sanchankot,
Nawabganj Bird sanctuary and Mogli Water Park are some spots worth visiting outside Unnao town.
Nearest airport is at Lucknow.
Unnao Junction Railway Station is on the Kanpur-Lucknow line.
National Highway 25 passes through the town.
