Fatehgarh, the administrative headquarters of
Farrukhabad District, is 150 km northwest of
Lucknow and 160 km northeast of
Agra. Fatehgarh forms a twin city with
Farrukhabad, which is 5 km away. Founded in 1714, Fatehgarh derives its name from an old fort located here.
Fatehgarh is a major manufacturing center and agricultural market of Uttar Pradesh. Apart from the agricultural produce; perfume, saltpeter and cotton prints are also exported from the town.
Major tourist attractions in the town are the Buddhist site of Sankisa (ancient Samkashya) and the ruined tombs of old rulers. Nearby town of Kampil have many ancient temples. Fatehgarh houses one of India’s prominent open jails.
Fatehgarh Railway Station lies on the Mathura-Kanpur line and is a major rail junction of the state.
